RESNET HERS Rater Training

RESNET HERS Rater

The Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET) is a standard-bearing body that was founded to develop a national market for Home Energy Rating Systems (HERS) and energy efficient mortgages. RESNET and the Building Performance Institute (BPI) are the two foremost organizations in establishing the standard for home energy auditor training.

RESNET Training standards are officially recognized by federal verifications of building energy performance such as the Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR program and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Building America Program. RESNET Certified HERS Raters have the ability to verify the energy savings that allow homeowners to qualify for energy efficient mortgages.

Why take a HERS Rater Training course instead of a BPI Certification course? You will often hear that RESNET is geared towards new homes, while BPI is more for existing homes. This is true to an extent, because RESNET’s Home Energy Rating System is the only way to qualify ENERGY STAR new homes, and BPI’s emphasis on weatherization has been a big part of improving the existing homes of low-income families. However, both standards include thorough inspections and detailed reporting of the “house-as-a-system,” and both can be used for new or existing homes.

CleanEdison’s HERS Rater training provides you with the knowledge to perform home energy ratings in one short week. This training can stand alone, or it can be a complement to our training for BPI. Our classes are taught by energy auditing experts who are fully qualified RESNET HERS Rater Trainers, chosen for their extensive practical energy auditing experience and exceptional teaching ability. Our course materials are fully approved by the RESNET committee, and are updated frequently to make sure you are getting the latest information in this quickly changing field.

This HERS Rater course consists of three days in the classroom, one day in the field, and a written test at the end. Two provisional ratings are included in the class and field work. It also includes an overview and tutorial in REM/RATE, the popular building energy modeling software.
