Building Material Reuse & Deconstruction Training
CleanEdison offers the first comprehensive Building Material Reuse and Deconstruction (BMR&D) training in the country, with curriculum developed by the Building Material Reuse Association’s 2009 Deconstructor of the Year. CleanEdison's BMR&D training teaches students the process of disassembling a building that is scheduled to be altered or removed from a site, while preserving valuable materials for reuse. Students will also learn about the supply chain for reusable building materials, which can be donated or sold to recycling or resale centers thus saved from an alternative fate in a landfill.
Watch this video from Sustainable Saint Paul for an overview of the theory and practice of deconstruction.
Deconstruction & building materials reuse offer many environmental and social benefits, including:
- Reducing the consumption of new resources
- Minimizing construction & demolition (C&D) waste and pollution
- Creating value-added markets from waste materials
- Expanding job opportunities and workforce development skills
The U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) building standards encourage deconstruction and material reuse activities and projects can earn LEED Certification points for building material reuse or recycling. Ideal for new entrants to the construction sector including at-risk youth, ex-offenders and/or novices looking to get into this exciting new sector, CleanEdison has offered Deconstruction & Materials ReUse training on a number of successful large-scale workforce development projects
CleanEdison’s BMR&D Specialist course is often paired with Lead RRP, OSHA-10 as well as Asbestos safety training for a 10-day schedule that includes both classroom instruction, as well as field visits to ReUse centers and/or deconstruction sites as well as hands-on exercises and demonstrations. CleanEdison’s in-depth training prepares students for work on building, renovation, and demolition crews with a focus on safety, teamwork strategies, tool use, and materials handling and processing. Upon successful completion of training, students will receive Clean Edison’s nationally-recognized certification, as well as OSHA-10 for Construction, Asbestos safety training and EPA-Accredited Lead-Safe Renovation, Repair & Painting certification. If students have received OSHA-10 and Lead Renovator prior to the BMR&D course the length of the course could be reduced to 6 days.
This video shows how deconstruction job training has been implemented as a path back to work for the recently incarcerated in Baltimore.
