Building Performance Institute (BPI) Courses

What is BPI? The Building Performance Institute is a non-profit organization devoted since 1996 to developing technical standards for home performance and weatherization retrofit work that are recognized across North America. BPI Certifications are required in many regions of the US for accessing incentive funds.

  • Worth knowing: Through BPI training, individuals can be certified, and companies can be accredited.
  • Market: BPI focuses on residential housing.
  • Schedule: Most of the BPI training courses take about a week, and have a classroom (usually available either live or online) and hands-on field training component.
    • Too Busy? By taking the classroom portion online, you can minimize your time away from your job. Also, we offer some expedited courses that allow you to gain two certifications in one week. These intensive courses are recommended only for experienced builders.
  • Getting Certified: The BPI courses include the tests in the course schedule and fees.

BPI Building Analyst
CleanEdison's BPI Building Analyst (BA) has been the most popular BPI certification, though the more advanced courses are gaining more and more traction, and can be a great way to differentiate yourself. The BA teaches the basic principles of building science, including how to assess energy efficiency in a home while monitoring conditions that have a direct impact on human health and safety. Trainees will learn how to use diagnostic equipment such as the blower door and the combustion analyzer to ensure systems are functioning together correctly to maximize home performance, comfort, energy efficiency, safety and durability. BPI Envelope & Shell
The follow-on course to the Building Analyst, CleanEdison's BPI Envelope Professional certification course focuses on the building thermal and pressure boundaries and the ways to enhance the envelope through insulation and air sealing techniques. The BPI Envelope certification in conjunction with the Building Analyst certification will make your company eligible to apply for BPI Contractor Accreditation.More Information, Locations, and Sign Up

BPI Heating Professional
Do your clients want their HVAC systems operating at peak efficiency? This course covers heating system load and sizing, design, duct system diagnostics, and proper maintenance and efficiency analysis. More Information, Locations, and Sign Up

BPI AC – Heat Pump
A sister course to the Heating Professional Course, the AC/Heat Pump Professional covers the principles of air conditioning and refrigeration, system load and sizing, design, duct system diagnostics, and proper maintenance and efficiency analysis. More Information, Locations, and Sign Up

BPI Multifamily Building Analyst
This course prepares you to analyze large housing complexes with multiple family unit, and covers boiler system analysis, whole building envelope analysis, audit software and audit reporting, and energy end-use allocation. Using your upgraded building science knowledge you will not only help building owners to solve heating, cooling and air leakage problems that are driving high energy costs, but you will also provide them with a more comfortable, safe and durable building.More Information, Locations, and Sign Up

BPI Manufactured Housing Building Analyst
Don’t underestimate this market: The potential for weatherization of manufactured housing has been assessed to be enormous – about 25% of the households that qualify for Weatherization nationwide are mobile homes. This course will teach the essentials needed to conduct an energy audit of a manufactured home, and also covers practical retrofit techniques.More Information, Locations, and Sign Up

BPI Insulation & Air Sealing Technician  **Group enrollments only - call 1-888-513-3476 for details**
The BPI Insulation and Air Sealing Installer courses prepares members of home performance contracting crews to conduct home performance and weatherization jobs to BPI’s standards of industry best practices using the “whole house approach.” This course has an emphasis on hands on building techniques.

RESNET HERS Rater Training

What is RESNET? RESNET is another non-profit standards development body, similar to BPI, that takes a broader approach to the residential efficiency challenge. RESNET’s aim is to develop a national market for home energy rating systems and energy efficient mortgages.

The HERS (Home Energy Rating System) Rater is an individual able to perform energy audits on new construction – using energy modeling software and either construction documents or measurements from diagnostic equipment like the blower door.

RESNET HERS Rater
CleanEdison's RESNET HERS Rater training includes three days of classroom training in building science basics, energy principles, and assessment techniques, including two complete audits using the popular REM-RATE software – one done with construction documents and one by using diagnostic equipment to take measurements in an actual home.More Information, Locations, and Sign Up

LEED Exam Prep

What is LEED? LEED, for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, describes both a rating system for buildings and the professionals that work on them. Our intensive LEED exam prep courses will get you off and running on preparation for your LEED professional exam. Where BPI and RESNET focus on residential construction, LEED programs are primarily for commercial, high-end buildings.

There are two basic levels of LEED professionals – the first is the Green Associate (GA), and the higher level is the LEED Accredited Professional (AP). The GA is a general accreditation, but to become an AP you’ll choose a more specific track – Building Design and Construction (BD+C), Existing Buildings Operation and Maintenance (EBOM), Interior Design and Construction (ID+C), and/or LEED for Homes.

LEED Green Associate Exam Prep
Passing the Green Associate exam is your first step to becoming a LEED® Accredited Professional. CleanEdison's LEED® Green Associate exam prep includes a complete review of the LEED® rating system, and will go over proven strategies for taking and passing the exam.More Information, Locations, and Sign Up

LEED Accredited Professional (AP) Building Design & Construction (BD+C)
This accreditation is geared toward professionals participating in the design and construction phases of durable, economical, and efficient high-performance buildings. BD&C-accredited professionals apply their knowledge to commercial, institutional, and high-rise residential construction projects. More Information, Locations, and Sign Up
